Is there a way to get the max and min values for the x and
y axes? I would like to know what the PV-Wave plot function
is setting them to if XRange and YRange are not set explicitly.
It seems like I should be able to figure this out from the
various system variables . . .

It's in !x.crange and !y.crange after plotting.
(You can use /nodata, xstyle=8, ystyle=8 to inhibit plotting
anything at all with your first plot call)
