To All:
Having been a VI user for many years, I have recently discovered the
joys of using VIM version 4.X.
Having recently tested the new BETA version of VIM 5 I was pleasantly
suprised to discover that it has support for many types of programming
languages including FORTRAN, C, C++, MATLAB, PERL, JAVA, HTML, etc.
I was disappointed that a syntax file for IDL was not included.
This language support is similar in nature to the many editing modes
available for EMACS in that it allows the user to edit programs with
a color coding scheme. Thus comment lines are different in color than
I/O statements which are different than programming structure statements,...
If anybody should develop or encounter a language syntax file to support IDL
("idl.vim") please email me.
For those users of the standard, vanilla VI editor, I strongly encourage
looking into VIM 4.6 / VIM 5. Vim can be executed in the vt100/ xterm mode
as well as an X window GUI mode (vim -g) VIM has many full screen editing
capabilities and many enhancements over the standard VI.
