Has someone tried the newly released educatinal (student's) version
of IDL 5.0? I know about the restrictions concerning array size etc.,
but they probably wouldn't bother me too much.

What I coulnd't get any information about is the license management that
is used under Linux. I suppose, the Windows version will come with the
ususal dongle, whereas the commercial Linux version is either sold as
node-locked or license-sharing. Sure, the home version will be
node-locked, but do you have to call up RSI (or CreaSo in Germany)
every time you change something on your system? I really didn't like
the hassle with the 4.0 version on Linux!

Thanks for any help

Martin

I have the student version running on Windows 95 machine at home. Unlike
the current version of IDL, no hard key or doggle is require. Just enter the
Site license number provide by RSI and on your way. However, I do find some
of the restrictions bothersome - I am a big IDL user who likes to do image
processing.

The student version does not have a license manager as far as I know.
First of all, the student version is only available on PCs (Linux and
Windows) and Macintoshes (NO Workstation version). There is no dongle,
upgrade policy or any thing like that. They send you a CD-ROM that has all
the executables on it and you load the proper version on your machine. I
don't even remember whether I had to input a serial number. I have only
run the student version under Windows NT and it has been working fine.
