And just to complete this, in 5.0.3 (which they installed today) I get no spikes
with or without /cell_fill. So everything is spiffy.

Interesting! In simplifying the problem to send to RSI (using 5.0.2) I have
discovered that my problem (spikes on the plot) goes away if I just use "fill"
rather than "cell_fill".

I too have been irritated by this problem of contour colouring when moving from
4 to 5. My current complaint against v5.0.2 is that (on polar stereo plots
particularly) the filled contouring will occaisionally put in a wild spike of
colour which ruins the plot.

I cannot call to mind any improvements in the map projections in 5 over 4.
