I've had great success with perl scripts that run IDL and issue
commands to it via a pipe. I'm sure the same sort of thing would
work with PVWAVE. Something like:

open(IDL, "|/usr/local/rsi/bin/idl") || die;
print IDL ".compile procedure1";
print IDL "var1 = 2.4";

foreach(@data_files){
print IDL "procedure1 '$_'";
...
}
