In IDL 5.0.3 for Unix, the example program

/usr/local/rsi/idl_5.0.3/examples/misc/sdf/hdf_info.pro

may be used to get a rough idea of what is contained in a HDF file, e.g.

IDL> hdf_info, 'myfile.hdf'
