I'm a relative neophite to pvwave and I have a (hopefully) simple question
which someone can answer. I have scoured the font sets and cannot find an
angstrom symbol. I've been able to create one from existing fonts, but the
result is less than perfect. Does anyone know the best (if there is one) way
to put together this symbol?

Check out /idl/notes/*.doc files. One of them mentions this.
If on unix, do a "grep ngstrom *.doc" to find out...
