at least for Solaris a starting point for the answer:
for the user at the workstation there is usually a process X :0 but
not for a user at a X-terminal. Sorry for not giving the complete script
to
determine the answer to your question.

You could try to examine the environment variable DISPLAY
(a=getenv('DISPLAY')), a workstation should have it empty or something
like ":0" or ":0.0".
