Lately, I've experienced many times that IDL withers away in an
indefinite "sleep" during file I/O.

My experiences are most of all connected to file output, during
SAVE commands and PS output.

Granted, I *am* working with pretty large data sets for the
SAVE/RESTORE command (files of about 55MB each), and I read a lot
of these during a single session, but my Alpha Server has 1GB RAM
and I'm *sure* that IDL doesn't have problems allocating memory.

My !version is { alpha OSF unix 5.0.3 Nov 3 1997}

It's difficult to reproduce the error in a consistent manner,
however -- I can modify, compile, run & rerun my programs several
times before suddenly the idl process just stops doing anything,
during output. I was wondering whether anyone else has experienced
similar problems with 5.0.3 or 5.1, or whether maybe the problem
goes away in 5.1, or.... well, anything.

In the back of my mind there's a tickling thing that says
"Interrupted System Call" - seem to remember that this was
an issue in IDL v 4, and maybe something happened in the
fix?

Since I'm not able to reproduce the error consistently I
thought I should just vent my thoughts here, in case someone
(including the "friendly people" from RSI watching this
newsgroup in silence :-) have any more details....

Regards,
