Someone (don't have the article anymore..) asked about
redirection of IDL output a little while ago. I thought
I should point out that it seems like IDL has such an
ability built into it, although it requires some entangled
call-external/callable idl stuff to work.

Under the Callable IDL for UNIX and VMS chapter, take
a look at "Diverting IDL output". The functions IDL_ToutPush()
and IDL_ToutPop() may be used to pipe any output through your
custom C (or fortran!) function. Using callable IDL, it's
not that difficult to pass the texts to be ouput on to
a user-written IDL function.
