Lisa;

Was IDL still running when you checked for this option? Maybe if IDL was not
running, it would work.

I have no problem at all opening a file with the Explorer on my
Windows NT 4 machine. If I have the IDLDE open and a click a
file with my Explorer browser (or from the Find tool from within
the Explorer, the file immediately appears in an IDLDE editor window.

I've looked everywhere on both my Explorer and my IDLDE environment,
and I can't find the "Folder Options -- Edit File Type" dialog box
you talk about. Are you sure you are using IDL 5.1? Earlier versions
of IDL did open a new IDLDE each time a file was opened by the Explorer.

Cheers,

David
