Apparently it is a problem with Sun, not idl. RSI suggested installing
patches 103461 and 103186. This makes sence because the same verion of idl
running on a sgi didn't have the problem.

Yeah, I tried something simalar, only the paths are too long. The idl code
I am working on is part of a production system used for verification, and most
of the paths to the existing data are too long. I would need another moniter :)
Thanks for your advice, I think I will look at hacking pickfile.pro to remove the
paths.

This is a known problem that is explained nicely on David Fanning's web
page.

Look at: http://www.dfanning.com/idl5_info/long_filenames.html.

We recently upgraded to Solaris 2.6, but the problem still exists.
I assumed the new version would implement the appropriate patches.
Has anyone else had this problem?

I used an alternative work-around. I made my own copy
of pickfile.pro and hacked it to make the window wider.
Not elegant, but it works...
