oops. i was WRONG.

i was thinking of the SAVE command when i said that
/XDR is listed as obsolete, not the OPEN command(s).

i had been using OPENW,/XDR along with OPENR (no /XDR)
on Sun Solaris in my app for a long time with no ill
effects. (it just happens that /XDR is the default
for Solaris.) when i ported to Linux, my error became
apparent.

i'll take my crow basted in a light vinegarette with a
dollop of cream and garnished fresh basil and served
with wild rice and forest shallots.
