Thanks to Dave Fanning and Liam Gumley for the invaluable advice in
reply to my earlier postings (a diolch arbennig i Geraint H. Jones).
Thanks also for writing so promptly - O.K. Dave, I'll buy your book.
It seems that .JPG and .GIF are supported in IDL 4.0.1 (DOH!)
(WRITE_JPEG and WRITE_GIF) , although the solution for the colour
table problem in xwindows is not so straightforward. Cracking newsgroup.
