Sure, most Emacs/IDL users only work this way. To see what a font-locked
file looks like, I whipped up a useless example you can look at:

Sorry it's so cluttered there is hardly any black left.
How is it done? You need install an idl.el file as explained on page
http://www.mpae.gwdg.de/mpae_RZ/software/idl/
and some of the first links (Customization, Font Lock).
All of these explanations were written at a time when I was using Emacs 19.34.
They all still work with Emacs 20.3. (Recent Emacs versions have much
more powerful and user-friendly customization possibilities which are
not mentioned in my documentation.)
