There has been some discussion of IDL licensing on Windows lately. I agree
that Windows licenses are expensive in comparison to other PC software.

However, there is one nice feature about IDL Windows licensing which many
people are not aware of yet. As of IDL 5.1 IDL floating licenses are now
completely shareable between Unix and Windows machines. If you already have
IDL floating licenses being served by a Unix machine then you can use these
licenses on Windows machines. A Unix IDL client uses 10 license units, while a
Windows IDL client only uses 6 license units, which is roughly in proportion to
the cost of the licenses. This feature is a great improvement over the dongle
based system, and allows cost-effective operation in a mixed Windows/Unix
environment.

When we bought 5 IDL floating licenses for Windows this simply increased by 30
the total number of license units in the pool of licenses served by our Unix
machine. The license units can actually be used by either Unix or Windows
machines, i.e. 3 Unix sessions or 5 Windows sessions.

To use your Unix licenses on Windows simply copy the "license.dat" file from
your Unix host to the Rsi/license/license.dat on the Windows machine.
