Greetings,

Some of you may remember my previous posts regarding
my proposed designs for a new US circulating $1 coin which
the Mint will release in the year 2000. The designs were
created using IDL's object graphics.

My initial proposal was for an Apollo Astronaut. The powers
that be, however, decided that the new coin should feature a
woman. The chosen woman was Sacagawea, the Native
American woman who helped Lewis & Clark on their
Corps of Discovery mission.

To make a long story short, a revised version of my eagle
reverse design (also done in IDL) is still in the running for
use on the new coin.

The Mint has just created a new web page where visitors
can view, vote, and comment on the finalists. There are 6
obverse and 7 reverse finalists, selected from a group of
about 80 obverses and 40 reverses. Go to:

http://www.usmint.gov/dollarcoin/finalist_home.cfm

Please vote for my reverse design # 122 !!!

If you do vote, please do not mention my name since
the Mint has not released the names of any of the artists.

The Mint requested that I make some design changes and
submit the artwork in the form of a "line drawing". That is
the image displayed on the Mint's web page, and it was
also done in IDL - generated from my 3D surface data.

Other finalists have a short description of their design
called an "Artist's Vision". I am currently attempting to
get the Mint to include the following description of my
design:

"The eagle soaring in the sun symbolizes enlightenment through
exploration of the heavens. The sun's ray design is inspired
by the artwork on a Mandan buffalo robe. The Mandans played
a significant role in Sacagawea's life and in the Corps of
Discovery mission."

I also created a Sacagawea obverse design, but it apparently
did not make the cut. You can view it, along with my other
proposals at:

Please feel free to send your comments regarding my obverse
design to the Mint.

In addition to email, you can contact the Mint at:

Thanks for any assistance !

I tried Tuesday morning and it worked. Here is the Mint's URL again:

My IDL-generated design is # 122.
Let me know if you have any trouble viewing it.
