I don't know of an official archive, but as David Fanning mentioned
DejaNews is searchable.

I keep 3-6 months of the newsgroup on my system for updating the FAQ. It's
not internet searchable, or even on my web site at the moment, but it
could be with a little effort. I run daily backups, as well, so I should
have the last year or so available on those.
This brings up something I've been working on over the last few months in
my spare time. I have about 40 MB of unused space on my ISP's server, and
about 8 GB of unused space on my local systems which will be tied into my
ISP in a week or two for local hosting of a few databases and internet
projects.
IDL is the most interesting work to me, but I get requests from time to
time that put me on adventures into other areas, particularly WWW
development. Basically, I've become pretty good at WWW development over
the years, and would like to have a web site that demonstrates that,
rather than the vanilla site I have set up now.
What I'm getting at is I want to set up a full-featured site that is
IDL-centric. I'd love to hear some ideas of things that people would be
interested in seeing. I'm primarily interested in remote sensing, but have
no problems putting things up that focus in other areas.
I've discussed an IDL/Remote Sensing newsletter with a couple folks on the
newsgroup. What other areas are people interested in? Newsletters,
searchable news or articles, product or project descriptions, conversions
of projects to IDL, student graduations, job listings, consultant
listings, conferences, events, satellite launches, etc. Feel free to
respond privately if you'd like.

That would be invaluable to someone like me who doesn't have internet
access on my machine at work and has to trapse over to the library
when I want to look up if someone has had a similar problem in
previous months. If I could have it on my machine at work it would be
a great help.

I'd like to second Phil's idea of making everything easily downloaded for
those of us whose work machines aren't connected to "the" internet. In
addition, I like a LOT of the other ideas. One thing that might be neat is to
allow people who are working on projects on their own a way to include their
projects either as links off of yours, or directly on yours. In particular,
if one person becomes an expert on false-color mapping, they could create a
web page for that, while a different person might deal with the ins and outs
of reading medical images, while I personally might focus on reading and
writing HDF data.
That way, we'd create a collaborative "book" about IDL on-line. If the whole
thing could then be loaded onto private intranets, so much the better.
My 2 cents worth.

No need to email it to me. I'm just trying to determine if there are other
ways besides HTTP and FTP to download a site, or if I should have cron
create a daily .tgz (tar'd and gzip'd) file to be placed on the site. I
think I'll do the latter and have it linked to both http and ftp
locations. Any complaints about that?

This'll be interesting to see it take shape over time.

I've got a program called nearsight which I will email to you which
does the trick adn can follow links, download pictures etc. It's
extremely reliable.

Yes I think that this is a great idea, I would certainly be willing to
contribute something on my current field of IDL expertise, which is
well....... not much really. Although I am currently writing an
object graphics environment which uses direct graphics to display.

Great. Care to elaborate on any that you'd like to see prioritized? Any
thoughts on implementation?

That should be no problem. I'm hosting everything myself at the moment, so
web space is not an issue. I had some problems earlier this week that
caused the site to fall off the face of the net that have been corrected.
I'm still waiting for GTE to upgrade the outgoing speed. I understand the
best connect speed to my site is currently around 8K/sec. It should go up
to 40K as soon as they upgrade it.
What are the various ways to download an entire site? I know FTP clients
(XDir on UNIX, cuteFTP on PC, Fetch, Transit, Anarchie on Mac) can tunnel
a directory and grab everything. I know there are various ways of using an
http-based program to do the same thing. Are there other options? Are
there other needs besides FTP and HTTP access?

Sounds great. I'd love to see that happen. I'll set up a form to easily
link or upload articles.

I'll get it going here in the next couple weeks. Projects call at the moment!

Let me second that comment.

Good idea with one caveat. Putting an email address on a website is an
open invitation for spam. Everytime I post the FAQ I get to look forward
to dozens of unsolicited emails. I'll put a reminder of the downside of
listing an email on the page(s) that handle that.

I was pondering this on a drive this morning. Lots of people have a small
library of routines that they use in-house but have not put them in an
accessible library. A simple means of uploading or linking files (.pro or
.sav) into a common site, ought to increase the availability of routines.
It would be searchable of course, and sortable by author, routine name,
routine type, keywords, etc.

Will do. Thanks for the ideas and encouragement.

This is in comment to Mike Schienle's idea for a generic IDL user's website:
Personally, I scour the net every week or two for good IDL ideas to add to or
modify my work projects with. D. Fanning's site is one of the best, of
course, and should be commended for his often unpaid support of the IDL
community. My idea for Mike is to include an email list of IDL users with
their area of expertise, such as mathematical routines, plotting, imaging,
GUI's, object graphics, IDL projects worked on, etc. In some ways, this is
as useful as a open library of IDL subroutines, and might be easier than
scanning Dejanews. Also, as a collabration, certain subscribers such as
myself, have IDL maintenance/support and can forward *relevant* community
questions to RSI.
Good luck with the site and keep us posted.
