This is not a problem with IDL. There is a setting for current graphic
devise called RETAIN mode, which is changeable. X- windows may not keep a
copy of the image by default (especially if you use a terminal emulator like
eXodus), in which case issuing a command

device, retain=2

will force IDL to maintain backing store and restore the image every time.
