Hi all -

Ready for a grand experiment with the IDL FAQ? It's not completed since I
need to add in the HTML links and there are references throughout to
Questions by their old numbering scheme.

Here's the scary part - you can update and add to it directly. Access to
the database is fully logged, so don't make me come after you :-)

Try out http://www.ivsoftware.com:591/FAQ/default.htm and let me know what
you think.

This was taken from the January release of the FAQ. You can still access
the old FAQ at http://www.ivsoftware.com/pub/idl_faq_4.html. The "_4"
denotes version 4 of the FAQ. There is a version 5 that was a complete
overhaul, but halted in mid-development. If this doesn't pan out after a
month or so, I'll put version 5 in place. In the meantime, I'll add the
version 5 info to the one provided above over the next couple of days.

FYI -- I was also unable to reach your website using Netscape
Communicator 4.51. Looking forward to your new URL!

Hi Rose -

I'm discovering that some proxy servers are blocking port 591, which is
the port where the FAQ is served from. Some proxies are much stricter than
others. Apparently, your proxy is blocking port 591 (the port where I have
the FAQ DB served from). Since I already have my regular web pages served
from the standard port 80, I had to use the alternative port 591. Please
let me know if you're not on a proxy server, since that would be a
different problem. My other choice is to use an alternate IP address
instead of the one serving my web pages. That way I could serve the FAQ
from something like faq.ivsoftware.com and have it be a different IP
address than www.ivsoftware.com. As soon as my ISP gets in, I'll be on the
phone registering a new IP address with them. I'll post a message to the
newsgroup when that happens. I expect the new IP address to be mapped to
faq.ivsoftware.com.

Hi Mike,
Just for your information, I was unsuccessful getting to this web address.
Netscape 3.01 was unable to connect to the server. I can
reach your main web page with no trouble, however.

I just used this to update the entry on editor support. First
interactive FAQ I've ever seen, and it works well.

So if you have something you think should be updated in the FAQ, go
ahead an put it in yourself.
