Hello group: I have been gridding irregularly scattered data to a regular
lat-lon grid near the south pole (the data that is, I'm not...).

trigrid/triangulate with /sphere, or sph_scat, ought to be the answer but
they don't produce good results: there appear to be rather arbitrary
artifacts in the output.

Anybody out there want to claim that sph_scat *does* work well for them?
Near a pole? Near the south pole?

IDL 5.2
