thanks to Ali Bahrami and Phil Sterne for responding to my problem. Apparently
the extra dots are causedby a bug in the Ultrix X-windows support and is
fixed in Ultrix 4.2. Also the dots only show up when part of a window is
obscured, a point I had missed before.
