According to the price lists:
IDL for Windows and IDL for Macintosh run $1500.
IDL for various workstations starts at $3000 (single user, single node)
and goes up to $15000 (unlimited users, single node).

RSI claims that they're always willing to cut deals with anybody buying
more than one license.

This is very curious. Is the price higher in Europe as well? If not
perhaps the increased price is due a government tarrif to deter the importation
of software in to Japan. Otherwise there must be some hidden extra cost
involved in doing business internationally.

How did you get IDL for $750? I thought it was going for $1500. I
would hope that once RSI gets enough income from IDL for Windows that they will
indeed drop the price (like most other PC software creators) and get it down to
where the average Joe can afford to buy it (in the neighborhood of $200).

Just Curious,

I'm running IDL (3.5.1) under OS2 2.1. In general it works well and is
compatible with
my unix procedures. I have, however, been getting a number of G.P.F.
(General Protection(?) Faults). My 486 also seems to freeze often when
I run MS-Kermit and IDL at teh same time but not, I think, when I
run OS2 Kermit. I've had a couple of other problems such as not
being able to use $DIR (I get a DOS window which closes immediately
the operation is complete but before I can assimilate the
information) and the screen not refreshing well when I'm running
a long job but I don't know if it is due to IDL or OS2.

The main problem I'm having is that the whole user interface is
rather jarring after using a program like Microsoft Word or doing
other things with the OS2 Workplace. In the primitive Unix world
(as far as user interfaces) IDL fits right in but if I weren't
tied to IDL, I would have searched hard for an alternative
before shelling out $750
for the PC version

I've been using IDL on Windows for a while and had some problems with
version 3.1.2. Version 3.5.1 is now available and has taken care of the
bugs (I hope).

To get a working demo of IDL for Windows ver 3.5.1 , ftp to
gateway.rsinc.com,
log on as ftp,
send your address as password,
go to pub/idl/windows
and binary get all the files in the directory.

The Mac and Windows versions go for $3,000 and the UNIX/VMS versions
for $6,000 here in Japan.
What's the point?

The Mac and Windows versions go for $1500 but the UNIX/VMS versions for
$3000.

There is no tarrif at least for the software/computer imports
here in Japan. Actually certain models of Macintosh computers are
cheaper than in the U.S. and sell very well ( unlike US automobiles).

I doubt it. RSI used to accept international orders for the same price
as in the U.S. A couple of years ago, they suddenly refused to sell directly
to oversea customers. In stead, they forced us to buy from their 'exclusive
local dealer' for the local price, which is two times higher than U.S. price.
