Bitmap printer output? [message #167] Mon, 30 September 1991 17:50

Often there becomes a point where it becomes cheaper tp send a
bitmapped (raster) image to a priner rather than send the "lines" and
"points" individually. This is particularly true if the raster driver
is smart enough to "tile" the page and only send non-blank tiles to
the printer (I have written such drivers myself for other plotting
packages). (For an Imagen driver I once wrote the turnover point where
it became worthwhile to switch to raster mode instead of vector mode
was at only about 200KB or so on average).

Is there some way to do this with pv-wave? Ideally I'd like a
"ps-raster" device or some such, but failing that a simple output
raster format which I could then write a something2ps filter for would
suffice. Suggestions?

[A ps file I generated today was nearly 5MB, In raster mode it would
have been <500K]
