I got an e-mail recently from the RSI people that there is some new
software called VIP Visual IDL Programming. I realise this hasn't yet
been released (well not here in the UK anyway!), but does anyone have
anything to say about it, good or bad. Has anyone had a look at any beta
versions? Or am I the only one to know about it, because RSI knows I am
not very good at programming and thus thought I would get excited about
drag and drop programming!
Cheers

Hy all,
due to a training here on-site we got also a demonstration on VIP.
From my point of view (as I am working with IDL now since more
than 8 years or so) it is a nice tool for beginners if they
want to plug some routines together without knowing very much
about IDL. I was impressed by the parameter handling which was
quite flexible: Any routine you select gets a window where
you may define some/all input parameters/keywords....
And all is something like nice boxes on a graphical screen which
you connect with lines.
However in this version, VIP lacks some facilities which may be included
in
future releases (e.g.: the presented version did not pick up own
set of routines in given directories automatically). And (as far
as I remember) it could not save appropriate IDL source code - of course
you were able to save and restore your work ;-)
