Hm -for the most people (me too) reinstallation is much more faster
then searching a long time in registry files.
For a few months I got a lot of problems using a HP4000 printerdriver
for Win NT 40. After installation it was never possible
to print to a local port of the computer. I tried myself a lot of tricks
to get it work, but unfortunately there was no success.
With the newest printerdriver after a complete reinstallation it works
all fine (takes about 3 hours if no PQ image is available).
It's not only Windows which will make the problems.

We have a lot of Win NT 40 Workstations using IDL and they are all
stable - very stable.
I can't remember myself when my machine last was crashed instead of an
application.

I don't also remember when my UNIX aix machines was last crashed but a
lot of time IDL crashed by a coredump.
By a failure of this kind a reboot will not give any better result.

That's apparently the difference between Unix and Windows: In Unix
you reboot, in Windows you reinstall ;-)

I'll join the chorus: "I can scarcely remember the last time it crashed
on me." I have IDL 5.20 and 5.21 on a couple of NT4/(SP4 or 5)
workstations here and find it to be pretty stable. Do you have
problems with other programs on your PC? If so then I'd recommend that
you check your hardware (esp. memory). If not then have you tried
reinstalling IDL? It might be that one of its DLLs got zapped, or
perhaps overwritten (a wrong version or something) by some other
program's installation. Also, I recall that there was some issue with
the HASP driver for a fairly recent version of IDL, and that RSI gave a
web link to download an update. I don't have the link handy, but you
should be able to find HASP drivers at http://www.hasp.com.

Cheers

I run IDL 5.2 on a fairly old AMD-K6 200 at home (to test cross-platform
compatibility). Never crashes; I am using archaic Windows 95. I though NT is
more robust than 95. Maybe, "not enough memory"?
Cheers,
Pavel

I'm running the exact same set up, have IDL running
virtually all day long, and I can't remember the last
time my machine crashed. It was a long, LONG time ago.

Windows can be very strange though. I had some odd behavior
(I couldn't write a PostScript file to disk) that didn't
go away until I finally reinstalled all of Windows NT,
with the latest service pack. It still puts the odd
application icon on the Shut Down button, which I
assume is NOT a feature. :-(

Cheers,

David
