A helpful person on the FreeBSD-questions mailing list gave me the
answer: I had not installed one of the Linux compatibility packages
that was needed. I now have IDL running just fine under FreeBSD.

The Linux compatibility stuff in FreeBSD includes the appropriate Linux
libraries and allows it to run most Linux binaries directly.
