This question concerns how idl controls shared color maps.

I am using idl on a SUN IPX with 8bit color graphics. I am running idl
under X using the X11R5 twm window manager. My questions:

Is it possible to force idl to use a private colormap without first grabbing the
shared color map with another application?

Can idl be switched to a private map after the first window is openned (with the
shared colrmap)?
