I'm investigating buying X terminals, and the vendors talk about capabilities
they have which is supposed to speed up the transmission of images by using
compression. What I'm unclear on is whether these extensions would be relevant
to IDL or not.
Tektronix talks about X Imaging Extension (XIE); NCD talks about Simple Imaging
Extension (SIE). Are these two names for the same thing, or are they similar
but imcompatible products? Are either of these relevant to IDL at all?
Thank you,
Bill Thompson

I think a lot depends on what kind of machine you're driving the terminals
with. We went through a terminal evaluation study to buy X terminals here.
We evaluated 5 different machines and made our decision based on the
capabilities of the terminal and the compatability with our VAX 7000
computer systems. The salesmen will tell you anything you want to hear,
but the bottom line is how well the X terminal works with your system. The
best advice I could give you (from someone who went through the procurement
process) is to get the vendors to install an evaluation terminal at your
site and make your decision from that. You don't have to be making a huge
buy to get cooperation from vendors either. We set out to buy only 5
terminals, but had no trouble getting demo machines for periods from 1 week
to 3 months. Good luck.
