Unless I completely misunderstand what I am seeing, it
appears to work for *all* the text on the axis. Do you
have an example that doesn't work, Mark? I'm using
IDL 5.2.1.

Uh, I think you can turn this off under the Global
Options/Replying tab, Mark. But I always appreciate
learning about other innovative solutions. :-)
