Thanks to all who responded to my call for help. Fortunately, as I read the
responses, I realized I was doing everything ok; it turns out my error was in
writing the file. The file represents a structure containing information about
my array and the array itself.

When I created the file, I was writing the header in ascii, then, in binary, I
was writing the header *again*, followed by the binary array. Duh. My bad.

Thanks again for the help...

matthew
