I'm sure there are more expert advice out there, but here's what I'd do:

help, /device

and see what visual IDL will try to use in making the window. Check your
local display:

$xdpyinfo

does your display match what IDL wants? If not, try setting the device:

device, Visual=depth

where you get visual and depth from xdpyinfo. Most likely the problem is
the Xserver on
peg3 is running a different graphics mode than the one on peg2. I think
you can also get
around this using device, decompose=something, but I can't remember all
the details of
how this works. Generally speaking, using IDL to display on another
machine can sometimes
take some tweaking because of the differences in Xservers on various
machines. I used IDL on
a similar system as yours (including remote display to various Win95,
Unix systems) without
any problems, and I loved it! You may want to take a look at the online
help file "The X Windows
Device", which should help you figure out what's going on.
