IDL on Open VMS, Call_External, and C structures [message #1878]

I'm running IDl on an Alpha with Open VMS. I am trying to port some routines
from a VAX machine. These call up C routines to read a file and pass the
structures back to the IDL routines. The problem is that the files contain
packed data structures , the C structures in the C routine are packed and
the VAX IDL accepts the packed C structures. Unfortunately, the IDL routines
on the Alpha want UNPACKED C structures. Has anybody else had this problem
and found a solution? Why did IDL change between VMS and Open VMS implement-
ations?

Any help or comments would be appreciated.
