Thanks to everyone that provided help. I think I found what I need
through a link at the above, which led me to a link for the book
"Astronomical Algorithms" on
<http://www.fourmilab.to/solar/credits.html>. I've ordered that book
through <http://www.fatbrain.com/>. For anyone else interested in the
book, the provided ISBN on the fourmilab page is outdated and should be
0943396611.

Here's some freeware

http://www.fourmilab.ch/

Program is called Home Planet

http://www.stk.com/

Program is called STK (Satellite Tool Kit -- I don't know if it
has planets but it seems to have everything else so, ...)

Mike,

Here is the definitive answer. Unfortunately it requires a
certain amount of expertise.

http://aa.usno.navy.mil/AA/

The NOVAS code contains a subroutine called tpplan (FORTRAN
version) which calls a JPL subroutine which access the database
and computes the planet position as seen by an observer on the
earth.

Also, see the link to Jet Propulsion Laboratory DE405 planetary
ephemeris.

Of course this stuff is not in IDL. You might want to check out
some of the IDL astro sites. They might have something that
could be used directly.
