Hi Eric,

I've run into the same problem, so I wrote some external C code to read the file
properties. It works fine with IDL5.0, but there are some minor changes in the
way that call_external is implemented in version 5.3. I think I've got the bugs
worked out- if you want to give it a try let me know and I'll send you the files.
