Hi

I think this gives the result you want (xticks=1)

IDL> plot,findgen(5),xstyle=8
IDL> axis,/xaxis,xtickv=[1.5,2.5],xticks=1,xtickname=['Lo','Hi'],
xtitle='Only Want String labels'
IDL> print,!version
{ x86 Win32 Windows 5.3 Nov 11 1999}
