Retreating to MacX 1.1.7 has fixed essentially all problems for me.
The procedure becomes complex for those with new machines like quadras.
For these machines, 1.1.7 seems to have a bug in not being able to save
settings files with logins, xterms command lines, etc.
For those with such new machines, the procedure seems to be
(1) set up MacX using 1.2, but using the 1.1.7 protocol for displays:
:0.0 -> B/W rootless
:0.1 -> B/W rooted
:0.2 -> Color rootless
:0.3 -> Color rooted
Use the newest MacTCP, etc.
Obviously, set MacX to respond to displays other than :0.0
(2) Save settings, and remove MacX 1.2 the application but not MacTCP,
or settings
(3) Copy in MacX 1.1.7 and run it.
(4) Run IDL; the only remaining difficulties are in chosing colors. I
like -84, but nothing is perfectly satisfactory.

Retreating to MacX 1.1.7 fixed the problems for me, too. I got a copy
from Apple by calling 1-800-767-2775, explaining the problem to them,
and sending some proof that I had purchased MacX 1.2.

I would be surprised if 1.1.7 works better, but maybe.

It seems as if there is a consensus out there: don't quit IDL!
We recently "discovered" the idea of using VersatTerm Pro as
the command line interface. We will try top get more experience
with this.

My impression that not quitting IDL is no guarantee of "crash-free"
sessions, but we'll check that out more...

You're not the only one having problems with IDL and MacX. If I can
successfuly get an IDL session started under MacX, it will continue to
work. Unfortunately, it usually takes me several tries through the
following procedure:

1. Start VersaTerm Pro
2. Start MacX
3. Start IDL from VT Pro
4. Try to open X-window from IDL
5. Did it work?
Yes --> Don't quit IDL!
No --> Quit MacX. Goto 2.

When it fails to open an X-window, it kill all my other X clients as well.
When it fails it generates:

csrp>idl
IDL. Version 3.5.1 (AIX ibmr2).

I have reported this to RSI (some time ago), but have gotten no response.
It may be a MacX problem. I am considering going back to MacX 1.1.7, if I
can find a copy.
