We use radical eye dvips here and I've never had any problems, using

\documentstyle[epsf,11pt]{article}
in the header and then creating the figure with:

\begin{figure}
\epsffile{idl.ps}
\caption{whatever}
\end{figure}

The only slight catch is that you must only use

device,/landscape if you really want the figure perpendicular to the text.
