This entire thread sounds extremely discouraging. I am sure my 5.3 works
just fine, and does all I want. How much did that "major upgrade" cost,
again? :-( It might be worth waiting for 5.4.1 for us poor shnooks.
Cheers,
Pavel

Just installed it. Looked in the What's New book, and XVOLUME and XROI
look like useful thingies, so I fire them up with the example code in
the book, and after several pages of font errors IDL crashes out with a
core dump. Hey ho...

Waiting for RSI to get back to me, will probably nudge them later
today. So far, not a Big Win!

That's on Solaris 8/SPARC on an Ultra 30.

I have similar experiences with idl 5.4 on my Windows NT, meaning more
frequent cashes. I am using (extensively?) David Fannings display
routines like xsurface, xcountour and xwindow beside some own stuff with
widgets and some objects with relatively much data space (about 150 MB).

Up to now I could not relate crashes with my operations. However, I am
suspicious about IDL's registry use since my machine(s) showed after
crashes a very slow recovery of the desktop.

Regards

Actually, we had the opposite problem...we found 5.3 to be not entirely
stable. We have a multi-user license on our Alpha server, and oddly
enough, if you tried to do anything where IDL has to pop up a window
while you were sitting at the actual computer, it crashed 100% of the
time. Using it via XWindows on other computers worked just fine. We
haven't had a single crash with 5.4 that I know of. Of course, like you
said, it could just be a Windows problem.
