In any case, did you use IDL with your multiple monitor system in the
native Windows? If you did, how were the results?

Yes, you do. Windows 2000 supports multiple monitors. I used two until
they took
the second monitor away from me :-( The setup is trivial and effectively
gives
you a bigger screen. My X server Exceed can be configured to have multiple
X
screens or treat both screens together as one big screen.

so I had just assumed that none of the Windows variants would have
native support for dual monitors. But, I guess you're right that 98
does. Go figure.
I was curious so I checked the web, and MS among others has an article
or two out on it, and you do have to tweak the settings a tad, so it
isn't as drop-dead simple as on a Mac, but it doesn't look bad at all.
They say they don't support all cards, so one might want to check if one
doesn't have a common graphics card. While I was at it, I also checked
to see if 2000 supports the same feature, and it doesn't look like it.
For Windows, it's 98 or buy yourself a special card.

All I tried to say is that, to the best of my knowledge, the only Wintel
OS that natively supports multiple monitors is 98, and maybe 2000. I am
sure all sorts of hardware are available to bypass the limitations of
any OS. Including, but not limited to, buying a video projector and
displaying IDL work on a wall, while running a small television window
in the corner with your favorite team's game.
It all depends on how expensive you want your second screen to be. If
your OS supports it natively, an 8 Mb accelerated PCI video card can be
bought for less than $10. Dual-monitor Matrox, on the other hand, costs
around $200.

It is not true that you can't run dual monitors under NT 4.0. We are doing
it, and IDL works fine with it. The limitation is that you have to buy a
graphics card which specifically supports it, but they are available. Since
I am not in front of the machine I can't tell you what model we have right
now. But it's very nice, the desktop is 3200x1280 I think.
