Syntax
XYOUTS, [X, Y,] String [, ALIGNMENT=value{0.0 to 1.0}]
[, CHARSIZE=value] [, CHARTHICK=value]
[, TEXT_AXES={0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5}] [, WIDTH=variable]
[, CLIP=[X 0 , Y 0 , X 1 , Y 1 ] | , /NOCLIP] [, COLOR=index]
[, /DATA | , /DEVICE | ,/NORMAL]
[, ORIENTATION= ccw_degrees_from_horiz] [, /T3D | Z=value]

If that is correct then how come:

XYOUTS, 1, 40, Z=700, 'prevalence', TEXT_AXES=1, $
CHARSIZE=3, /DATA, /T3D

works, specifically I have BOTH Z=700 and /T3D rather than
either/or

this is on 5.3
