I've seen pvwave, but what is IDL? Nobody I know seems to have heard of
it. How would I go about getting it?
Thanks,

Historically, IDL and PV-WAVE originated from the same source (I seem to
recall that PV-WAVE licensed the software from Research Systems, Inc.).
They have now split and gone their separate ways, and new developments
from the respective groups can be expected to result in the two
platforms starting to diverge.
Research Systems makes IDL available via ftp if you want to try it
out. Ftp site is boulder.colorado.edu (128.138.240.1), directory
/pub/idl. Check out the README file there. Note that initially IDL
will run in the Quick Demo Mode. It will not run on your system for
more than 7 minutes at a time, but it can be re-run as often as
needed. The Quick Demo Mode doesn't allow writing of files and is
intended only for quick demonstration of IDL.
If you like what you see running the Quick Demo version, you can
call RSI and obtain a copy verification key which makes the program
fully operational for a limited trial period (30 days is typical).
NOTE: I do not work for or represent RSI. I'm just a satisfied customer!
