We have done this exact procedure many times to include an IDL
encapsulated postscript figure in a MS Word document. It is true that
MS Word only displays an empty box on screen where the picture will
appear, but when printing the IDL figure comes out correctly.
As an aside, we have found that of the many MAC applications we use
none interpret the EPSI format that is produced by the
"DEVICE,/PREVIEW" command in IDL. This produces a device independent
low resolution preview embedded in the postscript file. Our MAC
applications (MS Word, PoswerPoint, Canvas, etc) will only display a
preview on screen if a Macintosh PICT resource number 256 is present
in the encapsulated postscript file.

Well, we did (1) and (2), and tried to put it into Microsoft Word, MacDraw,
Power Point, and others and it seemed to think it worked. The size of the file
got huge enough (about half a meg), but when we tried to see it on the screen or
print it out, the portion where we put the picture is empty. There's a
graphics box, but nothing visible in it.
We heard today that "Adobe PhotoShop" will definitely work. We sure hope so --
it cost us $600 -- hope petty cash will compensate us!

I don't know what this statement means. You need to describe your
problem a little better.
