I've done this successfully by

1) Creating an encapsulated postscript file on the Sun (use the /encapsulated keyword)
2) FTP it to the Mac in ascii mode (it is an ascii file)
3) Put it into a Microsoft Word document.

You say, "We can't seem to get the ps files across correctly."
I don't know what this statement means. You need to describe your
problem a little better.
