I just performed a quick search on the word "pie" at:
http://www.rlkling.com/

and the following needle was amongst the thick haystack:
http://www.astro.washington.edu/deutsch-bin/getpro/library39 .html?PIE_PLOT

I hope this works for you.

Enjoy,

Tank you Med,

Hm, well next I need to tell Excel to produce a GIF from that pie chart
and imbed that in CGI script such that our Apache web server on a
Linux box can send it. A IDL only solution would be much easier...

I would use Excel. Using IDL to make a pie chart is, well, kind of like
using Excel to make a surface plot or contour map.

Thank you very much for that URL. It seems to be pretty close
to that what I need. I checked it with some test data and
finally got a pie chart. I ran it on Win 98 in true color
mode and ended up finding the plot in the Z device. I think
that can easily be cured as I need the data in a bitmap to
write as GIF.

Thanks for the other hints - I thought of using GNUplot as well
but if I could stay within IDL it would be easier.
