OK, so i peruse this newsgroup daily. From my experience, this and
sci.image.processing are two of the 0.01% of newgroups worthwhile reading.
I've been using IDL for ~8 years now. It has prevented me from (having
to)learning more of C and C++ (other than writing externals).

A post with two purposes:
1) I usually lurk, with some rare posts thrown in.
2) In article <3A713F5E.3385C876@SPAM.ethz.ch>, Niclas H M Tylli

We migrated from Matlab to IDL because IDL handles arrays with more than
two dimensions better, has better support for different data types, and
supports the Macintosh.

Make that thirteen. However, to put it the other way around, the amount of
traffic on a group probably reflects the number people concerned with the topic.
Perhaps there really aren't that many IDL users out there... A thought which
leads me to the question: Is there really any reason to use IDL instead of, for
instance, Matlab? I like IDL, but that is only because I happened to begin using
IDL.

Maybe there are twelve, if you count me too. I have no dog, so his name
is missing here.

I guess I'm not even a very good lurker, because I missed the original
message. I finally got back to catching up on the newsgroup today,
though, and appreciated seeing the whole message in Steve's reply.
I post occasionally, but not recently because I haven't been doing much
IDL work recently.

Hi David and co,
I've been trying to quit but have relapsed and am lurking again. I've been
programming in IDL for 6 years now. Long time ago (no not 18 years!) I
posted a very poor emacs hack for wave-mode, which has happily been
superseded by people who understand lisp! I now use Windows which ain't soo
bad except I miss version control - as does anyone who reads my code! (since
like David I suffer from diving in and "improving" stuff on a moments
inspiration.)

I have posted a couple of times in the last year but I read this
newsgroup regularly. I suppose that makes me a lurker.
I have made direct use of tips from Mark Hadfield, David Fanning, Greg
Markwardt so thanks guys.
Other people's input has also influenced my programming habits (for the
better) indirectly.
I don't have a dog.
I want to add a family picture to this post but it contravenes newgroup
regulations.
