We still have a couple of OpenVMS Vaxen running happily along in the
machine room. They are running (Still!) PVWave v3, v4, v5 , and V6 -
but we didn't get IDL until a few years ago- so we have to go to the
Alphas for that (No VAX support).
My guess is that the Wave/IDL savefile format is identical for the
earlier incarnations.

Hey - I just shut down a VAX. It, VMS and pre-version-number IDL were
all running just fine, thank you. (Can't say as much for the 3rd party
hardware connected to it.) We got it second hand several years ago and
had never paid a $0.01 in hardware maintenance. Wish I could say as
much for the PeeCee's I have to use.

Was it running IDL?

Does this not help? [ Documentation from RESTORE: ]
---
Note to VMS Users
When reading older VMS format files, IDL knows that all floating-point
values are in VAX format. These floating values are automatically
converted to IEEE format. Only VMS/IDL is able to restore the native
VMS format.
Note - If you are restoring a file created with VAX IDL version 1, you
must restore on a machine running VMS.
---
Given the above, and assuming you still have a VAX, you could restore
and then resave in the new format. If you don't have a VAX I would
say you need to ask the RSI folks.
