Folks,
Craig's wonderful parody the other day of what most
of the regulars would say to a recent question, and
today's talk of lurkers has got me thinking. Are there
really only 10 of us paying any attention to this
newsgroup?
It occurs to me that if that really was the case
that you guys ought to be getting tired of the
same lame jokes I use all the time. :-)
And if my wife is right and I really don't have
the "huge following" I often profess to her when
I am trying to justify no income after 10 hours
parked in front of a computer, then I might even
be encouraged to go get a real life.
So I propose a new thread for lurkers only.
Here's the deal. You don't even have to ask an
IDL question. Just give us your first name and
tell us where you live. Throw in the name of your
dog if you feel like really living dangerously.
Just a note to let us know you are out there.
There will be two enormous benefits from this
thread. Those of us who do spend quite a bit
of time answering questions here can take
great satisfaction and three bucks and get
a latte at Starbucks. And people who hit that
SEND button will discover that your fingers
don't fall off, nor are you electrocuted when
you do it. So a big Win/Win for everyone. :-)
What do you say? Anyone out there? Only people
who have never posted, or posted no more than
once in the past 3 months, please.
Cheers,
David

Thomas, Albuquerque, New Mexico -
What if you've known about the newsgroup for some time, but only chose today
to actually check it out for the first time? Lurker? Or perhaps some other
term not fit for mixed company?
I've programmed with IDL for ~6 years...
And to what address should we send the $$$s for the 'latte'? ;)

I confess to lurk. I lurk therefore I might be.
Currently residing at/near 52N 13', 004E 29'. I'll let you try to guess
the nearest town.
No dogs, but one cat, who answers principally to "FOOD!!!", and
occasionally to "Psyd!" (silent 'P', as in swimming pool). He's black
and white.
Been using PVWave for ~10 yrs, IDL for ~5 - fluent in both, still using
both. Read the newsgroup sporadically (when time doesn't permit), but
always learning new techniques (thanks R. Kling for the intro to DLM).
I prefer to use the command line on an OpenVMS system (only reliable OS
I've encountered) but being migrated (forcibly) to Unix (one small step
for man, one giant leap backwards for kindliness to a man - backwards
in reliability, maintainability, usability) but relieved that it wasn't
windows.

Ok. here's the latte loot: "$$$", don't spend it all at once.
Sorry, I prefer the term "VMS/VMS" to win/win!

Well, I only posted in one thread - does that count?
Oops, delurked, revealed. I live in Maryland and have no pets.
I was in an IDL course Dave taught about 8 years ago and have
used IDL on and off since then. I scan the newsgroup regularly
for tips, and a few laughs...

I'm Jeff, and mostly I lurk although I have on occasion been known to
actually post, so I guess that makes me a semilurker or something. Live
in Virginia, work in Maryland, no dogs, no cats.
(Even just lurking, the information I've picked up from this group has
been extremely useful. Thanks everyone!)

I lurk a lot, I post ocassionally. My posts always seem to be for help, not to
give it. Being inept at IDL programming is likely the reason.
But it could just be that "I will post no whine before its time".

Yes David, you do have a following. I even pick up a books now and then
from yourself and Ronn Kling. Keep up the good work.

Hi,
My name is Doug. I live in Golden, Colorado, and work in Denver. My
typical use of IDL is to create some graph for inclusion in a
scientific paper. I don't do to much with it otherwise. IDL is one
of a suite of programs that I use for creating graphical display.
Others include Mathematica, Matlab, and SPLUS.
David, as a lurker I routinely look for your postings in this
newsgroup.
Although there is not much I can do to reward you for your work, let me
say that I do appreciate the time you take to post informative messages.
I bought the first edition of your book, IDL Programming Techniques,
primarily based on the quality of your posts to this newsgroup.
Anyway, here is my contribution to your efforts: All, if your are an
occasional user of IDL, in my opinion, the best reference is David
Fanning's book, IDL Programming Techniques.
Hope this is helpful.
Regards,
Doug

Hi,
I've been using IDL and reading The Group for about eight years, but I've
obviously got behind on my reading over the last two weeks!
I put in the occasional posting here and there, usually to nag yet again if
anyone would be able and interested to develop a Windows executable
(employing Callable IDL, I guess) that acts as a command-line IDL process.
If this were available, Windows IDL users can use the *wonderful* Emacs
IDLWAVE shell mode. I find the IDLWAVE editing mode to be great, even on its
own! Any takers? Please contact me.
Oh, and in our family are Pepper the dog, and the cats Dizzy, Jerry and
Robbin! (the cats demanded equal time)
Thanks again to all contributors to this wonderful newsgroup.
Cheers,

my main machines are an alpha/VMS (5.1.1) and a PC/LINUX (5.3).
I have found many useful tricks, hints, and suggestions in this
