We had a similar sounding problem some time ago (although I could not
reproduce it just now) when we tried to read files from on an optical
juke-box. Sometimes (especially when the platter containing the files was
not mounted in a drive), IDL would appear to "time-out" while waiting for a
file to become available. As with your problem, retrying the command
immediately always worked. We attributed the difficulty to some
interaction between the juke-box manager, UNIX, and IDL. We never solved
the problem beacuse of its occasional nature.
As I mentioned above, I was unable to reproduce the problem when I tried
recently, both reading files on optical-disk from the machine with the
juke-box directly attached and via NFS.
