What about issuing commands like :-

$Show Logical IDL_DIR
"IDL_DIR" = "DSA811:[IDLv54.]"

or

$Show Logical IDL_EXE
"IDL_EXE" = "IDL_DIR:[BIN.BIN_ALPHA]IDL.EXE"

or

print,!Path or

dirs = Expand_path(!Path,/Array)


That should provide sufficient examples...
